CHATEAU KSARA
Chateau Ksara Wines
Chateau Ksara, the country’s oldest winery, began life in 1857 when Jesuit Fathers inherited and began farming a 25-hectare plot of land to produce Lebanon’s first non-sweet red wine. In doing so they laid the foundations of Lebanon’s modern wine industry.
In 1973, the Vatican encouraged its monasteries and missions around the world to sell off any commercial activities. When then order to sell came through, the winery was optioned to a consortium of Lebanese businessmen.
Château Ksara was the first Lebanese winery to introduce “modern” grape varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay etc – into Lebanon in the early 90s, Today, its vineyards are home to 30 varieties of grapes for the production of red, white, rosé wines, vin doux (sweet wine) and arak.
All Château Ksara’s vineyards are located in the central and western Bekaa Valley at an average altitude of 1,000 meters. Château Ksara is currently Lebanon’s oldest winery, producing 3 million bottles each year. There are 16 different wines, an arak and a brandy eau de vie. The wines are available in 40 countries and the winery welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year.
As Lebanon's oldest winery, founded in 1857, we have made it our mission to not only continue our centuries-old practice of winemaking, but also to implement the newest and most innovative processes to set standards in winemaking for generations to come.
